i'd like to take you back about seven years in my life. friday afternoon, a few days before christmas 20__. i was the director of operations at a consumer products company in san francisco, and i was called into a meeting that was already in progress. that meeting turned out to be my e_it interview. i was fired, along with several others.

i was 64 years old at the time. it wasn't completely une_pected. i signed a stack of papers,gathered my personal effects, and left to join my wife who was waiting for me at a nearby restaurant,completely unaware. fast-forward several hours, we both got really silly drunk.

so, 40 plus years of continuous employment for a variety of companies, large and small, was over. i had a good a network, a good reputation -- i thought i'd be just fine. i was an engineer in manufacturing and packaging. i had a good background. retirement was, like for so many people, simply not an option for me.so i turned to consulting for the ne_t couple of years without any passion whatsoever.

and then an idea began to take root, born from my concern for our environment. i wanted to build my own business, designing and manufacturing biodegradable packaging from waste -- paper, agricultural, even te_tile waste -- replacing the to_ic, disposable plastic packaging to which we've all become addicted.

this is called clean technology, and it felt really meaningful to me. a venture that could help to reduce the billions of pounds of single-use plastic packaging dumped each year and polluting our land, our rivers and our oceans, and left for future generations to resolve -- our grandchildren, my grandchildren.

and so now at the age of 66, with 40 years of e_perience, i became an entrepreneur for the very first time.thank you. but there's more.

lots of issues to deal with: manufacturing, outsourcing, job creation, patents, partnerships, funding -- these are all typical issues for a start-up, but hardly typical for me. and a word about funding. i live and work in san francisco. and if you're looking for funding, you are typically going to compete with some very young peoplefrom the high-tech industry, and it can be very discouraging and intimidating. i have shoes older than most of these people.

but five years later, i'm thrilled and proud to share with you that our revenues have doubled every year, we have no debt, we have several marquee clients, our patent was issued, i have a wonderful partner who's been with me right from the beginning, and we've won more than 20 awards for the work that we've done.but best of all, we've made a small dent -- a very small dent -- in the worldwide plastic pollution crisis.

and i am doing the most rewarding and meaningful work of my life right now. i can tell you there's lots of resources available to entrepreneurs of all ages, but what i really yearned for five years ago was to find other first-time entrepreneurs who were my age. i wanted to connect with them. i had no role models, absolutely none. that 20-something app developer from silicon valley was not my role model.
而我現(xiàn)在做著一生中 回報(bào)最為豐厚、最有意義的工作。我可以告訴大家，對各個(gè)年齡階段的 企業(yè)家，都有很多可利用的資源。但過去五年我最渴望的事情是找到其他與我同齡的，第一次創(chuàng)業(yè)的 企業(yè)家，我想和他們?nèi)〉寐?lián)系。那時(shí)我沒有可以參考的榜樣，完全沒有。硅谷那位20多歲的應(yīng)用程序開發(fā)者可不是我的榜樣。
i'm sure he was very clever --i want to do something about that, and i want all of us to do something about that. i want us to start talking more about people who don't become entrepreneurs until they are seniors. talking about these bold men and women who are checking in when their peers, in essence, are checking out. and then connecting all these people across industries, across regions, across countries -- building a community.

you know, the small business administration tells us that 64 percent of new jobs created in the private sector in the usa are thanks to small businesses like mine. and who's to say that we'll stay forever small?we have an interesting culture that really e_pects when you reach a certain age, you're going to be golfing, or playing checkers, or babysitting the grandkids all of the time.

and i adore my grandchildren --and i'm also passionate about doing something meaningful in the global marketplace.

and i'm going to have lots of company. the census bureau says that by 2050, there will be 84 million seniors in this country. that's an amazing number. that's almost twice as many as we have today. can you imagine how many first-time entrepreneurs there will be among 84 million people? and they'll all have four decades of e_perience.

so when i say, 'let's start talking more about these wonderful entrepreneurs,' i mean, let's talk about their ventures, just as we do the ventures of their much younger counterparts. the older entrepreneurs in this country have a 70 percent success rate starting new ventures. 70 percent success rate. we're like the golden state warriors of entrepreneurs --

and that number plummets to 28 percent for younger entrepreneurs. this is according to a uk-based group called cmi.

aren't the accomplishments of a 70-year-old entrepreneur every bit as meaningful, every bit as newsworthy,as the accomplishments of a 30-year-old entrepreneur? of course they are. that's why i'd like to make the phrase '70 over 70' just as --just as commonplace as the phrase '30 under 30.'
難道一個(gè)70歲創(chuàng)業(yè)者的成就 不同樣有意義，同樣有新聞價(jià)值嗎?和一個(gè)30歲的創(chuàng)業(yè)者沒什么不同。當(dāng)然應(yīng)該是這樣。這也是我為何要用 這個(gè)詞“70大杰出老人”——就像大家通用的“30大杰出青年”一樣。

看完視頻后，我覺得我們現(xiàn)在過得太安逸，太幸福了，沒有一絲絲的危機(jī)感，對自己的要求不高，成長的速度的太慢了，相比別人吃的苦，我們吃的哪里是苦呢?該認(rèn)真地反省自己了。
來了公司3年多的時(shí)間，我一直問自己，自己給公司帶來什么樣的價(jià)值，自己價(jià)值是否得以實(shí)現(xiàn)，我們總是希望從公司獲得更多，但是總是不懂得感恩，不懂得回饋，這樣公司能夠良性循環(huán)嗎?從你選擇這一家公司的時(shí)候，你就必須要清楚，不要總是想著逃避問題，想著怎么共進(jìn)退，只有公司越來越好，自己才會更好;如果公司一直在倒退，談何發(fā)展。
一個(gè)人的成功從來不是成功，何況什么是一個(gè)人成功，公司是你一個(gè)的嗎?一個(gè)公司能夠快速穩(wěn)定地發(fā)展，還不是需要靠一個(gè)團(tuán)隊(duì)的共同努力。雖然你是其中的一員，當(dāng)你覺得你自己可有可無的時(shí)候，憑什么你還有資格在這個(gè)公司待下去?
最近我總在思考一個(gè)問題，在你還是學(xué)習(xí)的過程中，你要思考你怎么才能夠做一名優(yōu)秀的員工，你連這一點(diǎn)都做不好，還指望你能夠做多大的價(jià)值呢?
你的崗位是什么，你主要負(fù)責(zé)的是什么?你都做好了嗎?你都做到位了嗎?你都努力做到更好，你在全力以赴，用心地做好自己的工作了嗎?你的工作是否有突破，還是內(nèi)依舊一成不變，你總是找各種的借口給自己失敗。
你總是希望你能夠快速地成長，又能夠賺到錢，又能夠?qū)W習(xí)到自己想要學(xué)習(xí)的知識，憑什么你能夠要求那么多，憑什么你能夠理所當(dāng)然地得到一切。你別人都努力嗎?你創(chuàng)造的價(jià)值能夠改變你自己，改變你的團(tuán)隊(duì)，改變你的企業(yè)嗎?如果都不行，你能夠成長嗎?成長是一個(gè)緩慢的過程，當(dāng)你意識到自己還有很大的進(jìn)步空間的時(shí)候，你就應(yīng)該朝著那個(gè)方向努力改變，不要質(zhì)疑方向，你要知道的時(shí)候如何找到更好的方法去獲得你想要的東西。
當(dāng)出現(xiàn)問題的時(shí)候，你總是抱怨，你總是一味地逃避問題，你從來都不是那個(gè)盡心盡責(zé)去付出努力的那個(gè)人，你能夠成功嗎?你看見別人這樣做了嗎?
你知道為什么在一個(gè)崗位上一直沒有任何的發(fā)展和突破嗎?就是你想的太多，但是從來沒有真正地落地，你總是希望收獲，但是播種的季節(jié)里面你都在做什么?你都用心地播種，栽培自己了嗎?
階段性的總結(jié)，是慢慢地積累，不斷地成長的過程，希望你能夠培養(yǎng)自己良好的總結(jié)習(xí)慣，給自己一個(gè)理由，改變一成不變的自己，改變那個(gè)不思進(jìn)取的自己，改變那個(gè)只想收獲從不付出的自己，你希望得到別人認(rèn)可的前提是，你覺得自己認(rèn)可自己了嗎?你真的覺得你現(xiàn)在做的一切就足夠了嗎?你就是如此滿足?
孩子，該成長了，如果一味地盲目生活，盲目地工作，度日如年，你的日子還能夠繼續(xù)下去嗎?
第2篇 英語演講:如何做好演講比賽的準(zhǔn)備
good evening everyone!
i am here to give you some hints and suggestions on how to deliver a good speech, and how to win in this competition. though i know the professors seated down here especially my professor, my coach, ms. li yanshu are the right ones to tell you. therefore, i am here offering my fair share of speech competition e_perience as a participant of last year's final.
instead of going down into a detailed dos and don'ts, i need to, first and foremost share with you my understanding of this competition: '21st century lenovo cup english speech competition' has always been regarded as the most privileged and challenging english speech competition in the academtic field nation wide. one of you, among the 15 contestants, is going to present yourself along with other top speakers around china, even some parts of asia. wow, just imagine how many eyes will be on you; the media coverage; the applause after your speech and the honor the competition will bring you...
if all that i have described above are the very reasons why you are here today, allow me to tell you: please stop right here. don't go any furthur. because i guarantee you, in the very end, you will be disapponited: no matter what kind of glory you recieve, no matter if you have won the first place or not. because it is transitory. year after year, the face of the first place, or the top ten will fade. by then you may ask yourself this question: 'what can i get from it?' the answer i found through my own e_perience are:
1 the courage to present the best of you and the true colors of you in the public.
2 the friendship and communication between you and other people you will meet during the competition days.
3 the potential opportunities for your future.
as for the first point, i suggest you to read more: newspapers, news magazines and of course, your speech. do enough e_ercises with your coach and always always ask what other people think about your understanding. because they can be objective. when you are on the stage, convince the audience with you idea with full confidence and grace. always remember, content is as important as pronunciation and intonation.
as for the second point, value the assets you will obtain through the communications with the people you meet. they share the same passion of engish speaking with you, but hold diffrent understandings of the world. just think about the clashes of ideas...the e_citing debate and talks you will have. as for me personally, i still keep close contact with the contestants whom i met through every level of the competition, we call each other from time to time just to chat, and we help each other out when we can.
last but not least, the opportunities hidden along the way. when we step out of the ivory tower, we can't help but ask ourselves, with all i have learned, what can i do to contribute to the community? with all the skills i have learned, what can i do to acheive my personal best? we don't need thomas friedman to tell us that the world is flat, we know that inside and outside china there are millions of institutions crying for internationalized talents. we need the right platform to offer what we have, and learn the things that will keep us as the eliete of the society. i am very grateful to be offered a job at lenovo, at which i am e_posed to the world and having my own voice heard. as the year of 2022 is drawing near, since lenovo is the official world wide partner of the ioc, i am getting e_cited and energetic as how i was when i was preparing for the competition last year.
as for you, you can do much better than what i did, and you have the future ahead of you.
so, have faith in yourself, with confidence and grace, embrace changes and differences, you can acheieve more than you can imagine today!
now i shall leave the stage to you, the real contestants.
