imagine a car without a steering wheel. tough to imagine, right? well, actually that’s the image you see if a person has no faith. faith helps to guide us in our lives, encourage us to persist, and give directions when we are lost.
in this peaceful era, our life paths seem to be already well-planned and determined. what we have to do is to follow. yes, we may face different sorts of challenges, but at least they are less harsh when compared to those in the past. we do not need to worry about starving to death, or how to earn enough money to buy food for our siblings and sustain our lives.
it is like driving from a muddy road into a highway. in the muddy road, path, you would say, as it is formed only by crossing on it many times, flattening the ground to form a smoother area so we can pass. the road is so bumpy and rough, with holes here and there and rocks lying all over. when we drive along this road, we have to be very careful, having a firm grip on the steering wheel, ready for a sudden turn or a large boulder that may appear any second. however, when we drive on a highway, everything becomes different. the road is smooth, straight, and visible. since there is no unseen obstacle, we may lower our guard, rela_ a bit, and loosen our grip on the steering wheel. one may even think, if we only have to drive on a smooth straight road like this highway, why would we need a steering wheel?
nevertheless, one cannot foresee the future. accidents do happen. for e_ample, a car may suddenly appear in front of you. at such times, if you did not have the steering wheel, how could you make a sudden turn? just as no one could foresee the sichuan earthquake nor the japan tsunami. if the one being trapped under the debris did not have faith, he/she would not have survived until being rescued. if we did not have faith, we could not recover from our sadness and rebuild our home.
faith is unique, just as happiness is. we feel happy for different reasons, we believe for different things. how can we know what we believe in? recall the last time you are discouraged, and you felt you had lost all hopes in your life. what pulled you back into the world? what pushed you to stand up and continue to strive again? that is your faith, your belief. faith is what makes you feel you can when others say you can’t.
faith is important…, faith is vital…, faith is necessary for us to live our lives. if we do not have faith, we are like a car without a steeling wheel. we can only afford to move along a straight and smooth path, and cannot meet any challenge in our lives. one must understand that no matter how smooth the road is, it is impossible for a car to go without a steering wheel. or, put it in another way, have you ever seen a car without a steering wheel on the road? so, act now, my friends, find out what you believe in, find out your anchor in your life, hold on to your steeling wheel of your car, drive on, and reach your destination. thank you very much.
good morning/afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. my topic is: faith does make a difference to our life.
the recent earthquake in japan has triggered a series of une_pected crises and even faith crisis among us. are the increasing natural disasters echoing the 20__ prediction by maya? is our future really so vulnerable and tentative? i am trying to probe the answer.
last november, as a volunteer of the global sustainable leaders forum, i first came across the concept of social entrepreneurship. in the inspiring speeches, i saw the determination and faith of converting ideal into practice. i couldn’t help asking myself: what should i live for?
the great thinker russell once put in his essay: three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.
by launching donation campaigns and bearing social responsibility, bill gates reshaped the stereotyped faith of businessmen.
then, how can i make a difference? a talk with my father gave me some inspiration.
my father is a superfan of traditional chinese calligraphy. when i was a kid, i had the faintest idea why i should practise routinely this form of art. it was terribly boring. but dad said seriously: as a chinese, we need to pass down and promote our rich culture. it is our responsibility.
yang lan, a well-known tv host once said: as a media worker, i want to track down the passage of time and history by conducting interviews. for me, the responsibility outweighs the occupation itself.
far back to confucius, who was once obscure and humble, undertook the seemingly hopeless task of building a harmonious society. but with his strong faith, hemade a change by spreading the seeds of wisdom.
the story about three craftsmen further illustrates the power of faith. when asked about their work, one said: i'm piling up the bricks. another replied: i'm building the wall. the third responded: i'm designing a home for people. these three replies mirrored distinct insights toward work: task, job, and undertaking.
in my university, students majoring in national defence choose to devote their golden years to safeguarding our mother land. they have interpreted faith with their own dynamic youth.
my friends, musicians can not simply provide us with lyrical notes, but create melody to sooth our soul; scientists can not merely invent machines, but utilize their wisdom to reshape our lifestyle; teachers can not just impart knowledge, but usher us to become a worthy person!
so, my dear friends, life without faith is just like music without melody, and world without color. we are who we choose to be. it is faith that’ll remove our fear about future and stretch the radius of our life. let faith light up all our young dreams.
thank you!
sports are more than competitions. to me, they mean growth under the care of others. i learned this the hard way.
i used to be very shy and often felt lonely. although i did well in all the academic subjects, i was afraid of physical education. my classmates often laughed at me.
“look at that girl,” they said. “her feet don’t leave the ground when she runs!”
their words embarrassed me. moreover, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their partner or team member. as a result, i often ended up looking at others enjoy their games.
things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. by mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women’s 1500 meters race. by the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change.
my desk-mate was a natural athlete. she said to me, “i couldn’t run that race in your place, because i’ve signed up for three items already.” other athletic girls of the class said the same.
i was utterly dumbfounded. 1500 meters! running against the best runners from other classes! and in front of students of the entire school! it would be the worst nightmare i’d ever have!
“you still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet,” they all said this to me, including my teacher.
my desk-mate patted me on the shoulder, “cool! you will run for our class! and we will do training together.” yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, i said to myself. but still, 1500 meters to me was like mount everest to a beginning climber. i had no idea even how to start my preparation.
fortunately, my desk-mate gave me a hand. every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. when the fear of being laughed at struck me, i saw others running right beside me. they gave me strengths. while we were running, some others would stand by the tracks cheering for us.
one month certainly couldn’t make me a good runner. but when i was standing behind the start line, i no longer felt lonely or afraid. i saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if about to run beside me.
with the shot of the starting gun, i dashed out and ran as fast as i could, as if it were a 200-meter race. soon i was out of breath and slowed down. other runners passed me one by one, and gradually i had no idea how many of them were still behind me. my legs were getting heavier and heavier, and i might fall down at any moment. however, i suddenly heard my classmates chanting my name. my desk-mate even ran along the tracks beside me and cheered for me at the same time, just like the month-long training we did together.
as e_pected, i was almost the last to cross the finish line. immediately, my classmates held my arms and urged me to walk on my feet and not to sit down. i was surrounded, with all kinds of drinks handed to me. i felt a kind of warmth i had never felt before. even though i was almost the last to finish the race, i was full of confidence that i would improve in the future.
that sports meet was an unforgettable e_perience. the memory of my classmates cheering for me, holding my arms and handing me drinks stays fresh on my mind. sports are no longer about winning or losing. they give me a lot of confidence, both confidence in my fellow students and confidence in my own potential. i am no longer lonely, no longer afraid. sports have brought me close to my classmates and helped us grow together.
now, i participate in the sports meet every year. even if i am not competing, i would help my classmates with their practice, just like the way my desk-mate and others ran with me.
i have a question for you. ‘do you know how to breathe?’ okay, i know what you are thinking now, “girl, are you kidding me? everybody knows how to breathe.” actually, if i were you sitting down in there one year ago, i would think, “how did she make it to the final?”
alright, seriously speaking, what i am talking about is “the art of breathing”, and it’s about breathing in a yoga way: peacefully and always under control. what it reveals is the real essence of perseverance, “in order to achieve, sometimes, you need to wait.” and when it comes to things you really want in life, it is as hard as it could possibly be.
for me, singing is a life thing. when i am singing on the stage, i feel whole-heartedly involved, and the self-fulfillment it renders is ine_plicably thrilling. but with all the realistic problems i need to face in life, all those i want seem too far to be true– so far that i am terrified that i will never ever be able to get there and that gradually i will be carried away by the currents and torrents of life. i’ve been drowned into this ambivalence for so long. now, with a refined perspective towards self-realization, i am waiting, in a graceful posture, and knowing that i am going to get there. and on this, i should say, i owe yoga a thank-you.
i still remember, about one year ago, i attended a yoga course for the very first time. and to tell you the truth, i went there for a nice figure. however, after practicing for some time, i discovered that there was an ineffable inner-strength burgeoning sneakily in me while i totally focused. in order not to let go this significant power, i started to picture all i wanted in my mind while i was fully concentrating, for i believe the wings of imagination could make things possible. i learned to breathe with my dreams, shaping the eagerness into this elegant gesture of persisting.
and now, if you ask me what e_actly is “the art of breathing”, i would say it is indeed “the art of living”. it combines the search of balance, the grace of patience, and the awareness of appreciation.
so even though feelings are tied up with life routines, i could still hold onto that free ego which i have always adored: the girl who is singing under the spotlight, with all her heart and soul; the girl who is persevering with all she believes in and always feels grateful for what has been bestowed on her.
that girl is now standing right here in front of you, hoping that you are all as lucky as she is, living with dreams and love. no matter how tough things get, i tell myself, i tell myself that, every single thing i am doing now is every step closer to that very moment of my trajectory, just like every yoga breath to every blossom moment of my life.
how well are we in tune with the rhythm of life? in our busy day to day e_istence, we don’t often stop to ask ourselves this question. at least i don’t. and it wasn’t until i joined a competitive sporting event that i learned a most important lesson – we must place our mind in harmony with the natural order of things to be successful.
let me tell you what happened.
i decided to take part in an international marathon in my hometown last year. being an ambitious person, i hoped to finish it within 5 hours, accompanied by my friend with whom i had trained.
the big day finally arrived. 'ready...set...bang' and we were off.
at first, we kept a rapid pace and ran nonstop. at this pace, we finished the first 20 kilometers in 2 hours and i thought running a marathon was a piece of cake. then my running mate began to slow down. i urged him to keep running at the same pace but he said no, he wanted to conserve his energy. i felt i had partnered with the wrong person, therefore, i sprinted on and left him behind in the dust.
a few kilometers later, i began to understand his strategy as my pace slowed to a jog then a walk. after that i was incapable of moving another step. i was humiliated as more and more people ran passed me. more than once i thought 'maybe i should quit.' i started to doubt my ability to finish this race.
at this moment, my running mate caught up with me and slapped me on the back. “follow me,” he shouted. he had balanced his marathon pace and was encouraged me to do the same. for the rest of this grueling contest, we walked, jogged, ran a few miles, and walked again. slowly, painfully but hopefully this time, we established the most suitable pace within the natural flow of our physical capabilities.
eventually we accomplished our first marathon of 42 kilometers in 4 and half hours. i asked myself, what did this marathon mean to me? my marathon e_perience became an influential metaphor for my life about how we must learn to pace ourselves in everything, by being in tune with the rhythm of life.
like the tide that ebbs and flows, we must listen to advice but make our own decisions. like the show at dawn and dusk, we must learn to balance pride and modesty. and from the way the wind can both shout and whisper, we must learn when to be strong and when to be gentle, for everything moves in its own rhythm and its own yin and yang elements. it is the interaction of these complementary e_tremes that produces harmony, as laozi said, e_tremes meet. since the marathon, this notion of two opposite forces working together has been my running partner, so to speak. yin and yang e_ist everywhere, constantly interacting, and never e_isting in an absolute condition.
ladies and gentlemen, life is like running a marathon, let us discover, define and develop a natural rhythm of life, in order to achieve both harmony and success.
thank you for listening.

my definition of success
today i am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. what is success? it is what everyone is longing for.sometimes success would be rather simple. winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the e_am is success; making a new friend is success; even now i am
standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.
however, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomes very
complicated. is fortune success? is fame success? is high social status success? no, i don’t think so. i believe success is the realization of people’
s hopes and ideals.nowadays, in the modern society there are many people
who are regarded as the successful. and the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and lu_urious life. so most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. but the problem is wether it is real success. we all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. if we keep chasing them, where is the end? what will satisfy us at last? therefore, we can see, to get the real success we must need something inside, which is the realization of
people’ hopes and ideals.
different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. but i am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. these are the best treasures. so now i am very proud that i have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. it is my success, cause i raise up to challenge my hope.
what is success? everyone has his own interpretation as i do. but i am sure
every success leads to an ever-brighter future. so ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a
successful life!
i have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed-we hold theses truths to be self-oevident, that all men are created equal. i have a dream that one day on the red hills of georgia, sons of former slaves and sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood. i have a dream my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. i have a dream today! when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and hamlet, from every state and city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of god’s children-black men and white men , jews and gentiles, catholics and protestants-will be able to join hands and to sing in the words of the old negro spiritual, “free at least ,free at last . thank god almighty, we are free at last.”
asking the devotees of civil rights, 'when will you be satisfied?' we can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. we cannot be satisfied as long as the negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. we can never be satisfied as long as a negro in mississippi cannot vote and a negro in new york believes he has nothing for which to vote. no, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousnelike a mighty stream.

but there is something that i must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. in the proceof gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterneand hatred.

good afternoon ,ladies and gentlemen!
i’m very honored to stand here and give you a short speech! to begin with ,i want to ask a question .does everybody dream a good dream last night? actually ,today i want to talk about dream with you. of course, what i want to talk is not a dream you have last night, but a dream—— about life.
everyone has dreams about life, different dreams at different life stage, and we need dreams to support us. dreams are like the stars we never reach in the sky,but like most mariners(水手),we can chart our course by them. with the dream,we have a direction, with a direction, we were no longer confused.with the dream, there is hope, with hope, we have the strength to fight.
i have a dream: to be a doctor.,because doctor may relieve the pain of patients. may let the human change the health. at the same time, i believed that, those who help others may be able to obtain joyfully. therefore, i hoped in the near future ,i might be a doctor.
but i know, life is tough, and there are always ups and downs, maybe we fail in the way to our aims, and we may feel depressed ,whenever at this time, the dream in our heart can always comfort us, encourage us ,and support us to move ahead .
young!fortunately, i am young now. just due to it, i know that nothing is impossible.i firmly believe that nothing can stand in my way. if i can't realize my dream,it result from that i haven't work harder enough and i won't find other e_cuses. if no people believe you, you can make it to prove that you are right. if you think the god haven't blessed you and there is no truth here, you can become the god and create the truth.
'my breath swallows the sky and make the yellow river overflow, my sword is famous in kyushu and it can collapse the five sacred mountains.' at some time in the past i also had am bitious words and i had some achievements. each achievement results from my hard work. i always believe that 'if you want to have more achievements than others, you must work harder.' in some e_tent, the dream is the hope. if you can insist on doing something, the victory will come.
hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. so my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today. let's--- move ----out!
thank you for your listening!

as americans gather to celebrate this week, we show our gratitude for the many blessings in our lives. we are grateful for our friends and families who fill our lives with purpose and love. we're grateful for our beautiful country, and for the prosperity we enjoy. we're grateful for the chance to live, work and worship in freedom. and in this thanksgiving week, we offer thanks and praise to the provider of all these gifts, almighty god.
we also recognize our duty to share our blessings with the least among us. throughout the holiday season, schools, churches, synagogues and other generous organizations gather food and clothing for their neighbors in need. many young people give part of their holiday to volunteer at homeless shelters or food pantries. on thanksgiving, and on every day of the year, america is a more hopeful nation because of the volunteers who serve the weak and the vulnerable.
the thanksgiving tradition of compassion and humility dates back to the earliest days of our society. and through the years, our deepest gratitude has often been inspired by the most difficult times. almost four centuries ago, the pilgrims set aside time to thank god after suffering through a bitter winter. george washington held thanksgiving during a trying stay at valley forge. and president lincoln revived the thanksgiving tradition in the midst of a civil war.
the past year has brought many challenges to our nation, and americans have met every one with energy, optimism and faith. after lifting our economy from a recession, manufacturers and entrepreneurs are creating jobs again. volunteers from across the country came together to help hurricane victims rebuild. and when the children of beslan, russia suffered a brutal terrorist attack, the world saw america's generous heart in an outpouring of compassion and relief.
the greatest challenges of our time have come to the men and women who protect our nation. we're fortunate to have dedicated firefighters and police officers to keep our streets safe. we're grateful for the homeland security and intelligence personnel who spend long hours on faithful watch. and we give thanks to the men and women of our military who are serving with courage and skill, and making our entire nation proud.
like generations before them, today's armed forces have liberated captive peoples and shown compassion for the suffering and delivered hope to the oppressed. in the past year, they have fought the terrorists abroad so that we do not have to face those enemies here at home. they've captured a brutal dictator, aided last month's historic election in afghanistan, and help set iraq on the path to democracy.
our progress in the war on terror has made our country safer, yet it has also brought new burdens to our military families. many servicemen and women have endured long deployments and painful separations from home. families have faced the challenge of raising children while praying for a loved one's safe return. america is grateful to all our military families, and the families mourning a terrible loss this thanksgiving can know that america will honor their sacrifices forever.
as commander-in-chief, i've been honored to thank our troops at bases around the world, and i've been inspired by the efforts of private citizens to e_press their own gratitude. this month, i met shauna fleming, a 15-year-old from california who coordinated the mailing of a million thank you letters to military personnel. in october, i met ken porwoll, a world war ii veteran who has devoted years of his retirement to volunteering at a va medical center in minneapolis. and we've seen the generosity of so many organizations, like give2thetroops, a group started in a basement by a mother and son that has sent thousands of care packages to troops in the field.
thanksgiving reminds us that america's true strength is the compassion and decency of our people. i thank all those who volunteer this season, and laura and i wish every american a happy and safe thanksgiving weekend.
thank you for listening.
five score years ago, a great american, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the emancipation proclamation. this momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. it came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.
but one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the negro is still not free. one hundred years later, the life of the negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. one hundred years later, the negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. one hundred years later, the negro is still languishing in the corners of american society and finds himself an e_ile in his own land. so we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.
in a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. when the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution and the declaration of independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every american was to fall heir. this note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
it is obvious today that america has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. instead of honoring this sacred obligation, america has given the negro people a bad check which has come back marked 'insufficient funds.' but we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. we refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.
so we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.
we have also come to this hallowed spot to remind america of the fierce urgency of now. this is no time to engage in the lu_ury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of god's children. now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.
it would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the negro. this sweltering summer of the negro's legitimate discontent will not pauntil there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. nineteen si_ty-three is not an end, but a beginning.

vice president johnson, mr. speaker, mr. chief justice, president eisenhower, vice president ni_on, president truman, reverend clergy, fellow citizens:
we observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration of freedom -- symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning -- signifying renewal, as well as change. for i have sworn before you and almighty god the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three-quarters ago.
the world is very different now. for man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. and yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe -- the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of god.
we dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of americans -- born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage, and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.
let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty. this much we pledge -- and more.
to those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. united there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. divided there is little we can do -- for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder. to those new states whom we welcome to the ranks of the free, we pledge our word that one form of colonial control shall not have passed away merely to be replaced by a far more iron tyranny. we shall not always e_pect to find them supporting our view. but we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom -- and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside.
to those people in the huts and villages of half the globe struggling to break the bonds of mass misery, we pledge our best efforts to help them help themselves, for whatever period is required -- not because the communists may be doing it, not because we seek their votes, but because it is right. if a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.
to our sister republics south of our border, we offer a special pledge: to convert our good words into good deeds, in a new alliance for progress, to assist free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty. but this peaceful revolution of hope cannot become the prey of hostile powers. let all our neighbors know that we shall join with them to oppose aggression or subversion anywhere in the americas. and let every other power know that this hemisphere intends to remain the master of its own house.
to that world assembly of sovereign states, the united nations, our last best hope in an age where the instruments of war have far outpaced the instruments of peace, we renew our pledge of support -- to prevent it from becoming merely a forum for invective, to strengthen its shield of the new and the weak, and to enlarge the area in which its writ may run. finally, to those nations who would make themselves our adversary, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction.
we dare not tempt them with weakness. for only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed. but neither can two great and powerful groups of nations take comfort from our present course -- both sides overburdened by the cost of modern weapons, both rightly alarmed by the steady spread of the deadly atom, yet both racing to alter that uncertain balance of terror that stays the hand of mankind's final war.
so let us begin anew -- remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate.
let both sides e_plore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us. let both sides, for the first time, formulate serious and precise proposals for the inspection and control of arms, and bring the absolute power to destroy other nations under the absolute control of all nations.
let both sides seek to invoke the wonders of science instead of its terrors. together let us e_plore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depths, and encourage the arts and commerce.
let both sides unite to heed, in all corners of the earth, the command of isaiah -- to 'undo the heavy burdens, and [to] let the oppressed go free.' and, if a beachhead of cooperation may push back the jungle of suspicion, let both sides join in creating a new endeavor -- not a new balance of power, but a new world of law -- where the strong are just, and the weak secure, and the peace preserved. all this will not be finished in the first one hundred days. nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days; nor in the life of this administration; nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. but let us begin.
in your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. since this country was founded, each generation of americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. the graves of young americans who answered the call to service surround the globe. now the trumpet summons us again -- not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need -- not as a call to battle, though embattled we are -- but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, 'rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation,' a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself. can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, north and south, east and west, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? will you join in that historic effort? in the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of ma_imum danger. i do not shrink from this responsibility -- i welcome it. i do not believe that any of us would e_change places with any other people or any other generation. the energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it. and the glow from that fire can truly light the world. and so, my fellow americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country. my fellow citizens of the world, ask not what america will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.
finally, whether you are citizens of america or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. with a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking his blessing and his help, but knowing that here on earth god's work must truly be our own.

the country has just taken part in a giant democratic e_ercise – perhaps the biggest in our history. over 33 million people – from england, scotland, wales, northern ireland and gibraltar – have all had their say.
we should be proud of the fact that in these islands we trust the people with these big decisions.
we not only have a parliamentary democracy, but on questions about the arrangements for how we are governed, there are times when it is right to ask the people themselves - and that is what we have done.
the british people have voted to leave the european union and their will must be respected.
i want to thank everyone who took part in the campaign on my side of the argument, including all those who put aside party differences to speak in what they believed was the national interest.
and let me congratulate all those who took part in the leave campaign – for the spirited and passionate case that they made.
the will of the british people is an instruction that must be delivered. it was not a decision that was taken lightly, not least because so many things were said by so many different organisations about the significance of this decision.
so there can be no doubt about the result.
across the world people have been watching the choice that britain has made. i would reassure those markets and investors that britain’s economy is fundamentally strong.
and i would also reassure brits living in european countries and european citizens living here that there will be no immediate changes in your circumstances. there will be no initial change in the way our people can travel, in the way our goods can move or the way our services can be sold.
we must now prepare for a negotiation with the european union. this will need to involve the full engagement of the scottish, welsh and northern ireland governments, to ensure that the interests of all parts of our united kingdom are protected and advanced.
but above all this will require strong, determined and committed leadership.
i am very proud and very honoured to have been prime minister of this country for si_ years.
i believe we have made great steps, with more people in work than ever before in our history; with reforms to welfare and education; increasing people’s life chances; building a bigger and stronger society; keeping our promises to the poorest people in the world, and enabling those who love each other to get married whatever their se_uality.
but above all restoring britain’s economic strength, and i am grateful to everyone who has helped to make that happen.
i have also always believed that we have to confront big decisions – not duck them.
that’s why we delivered the first coalition government in seventy years to bring our economy back from the brink. it’s why we delivered a fair, legal and decisive referendum in scotland. and why i made the pledge to renegotiate britain’s position in the european union and hold a referendum on our membership, and have carried those things out.
i fought this campaign in the only way i know how – which is to say directly and passionately what i think and feel – head, heart and soul.
i held nothing back.
i was absolutely clear about my belief that britain is stronger, safer and better off inside the european union, and i made clear the referendum was about this and this alone – not the future of any single politician, including myself.
but the british people have made a very clear decision to take a different path, and as such i think the country requires fresh leadership to take it in this direction.
i will do everything i can as prime minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months, but i do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its ne_t destination.
this is not a decision i have taken lightly, but i do believe it is in the national interest to have a period of stability and then the new leadership required.
there is no need for a precise timetable today, but in my view we should aim to have a new prime minister in place by the start of the conservative party conference in october.
delivering stability will be important and i will continue in post as prime minister with my cabinet for the ne_t three months. the cabinet will meet on monday.
the governor of the bank of england is making a statement about the steps that the bank and the treasury are taking to reassure financial markets. we will also continue taking forward the important legislation that we set before parliament in the queen’s speech. and i have spoken to her majesty the queen this morning to advise her of the steps that i am taking.
a negotiation with the european union will need to begin under a new prime minister, and i think it is right that this new prime minister takes the decision about when to trigger article 50 and start the formal and legal process of leaving the eu.
i will attend the european council ne_t week to e_plain the decision the british people have taken and my own decision.
the british people have made a choice. that not only needs to be respected – but those on the losing side of the argument, myself included, should help to make it work.
britain is a special country.
we have so many great advantages.
a parliamentary democracy where we resolve great issues about our future through peaceful debate; a great trading nation, with our science and arts, our engineering and our creativity respected the world over.
and while we are not perfect, i do believe we can be a model of a multi-racial, multi-faith democracy, where people can come and make a contribution and rise to the very highest that their talent allows.
although leaving europe was not the path i recommended, i am the first to praise our incredible strengths. i have said before that britain can survive outside the european union and indeed that we could find a way.
now the decision has been made to leave, we need to find the best way, and i will do everything i can to help.
i love this country – and i feel honoured to have served it.
and i will do everything i can in future to help this great country succeed.
there was a time when british olympic medal winners became household names because there were so few of them. but the 67 medals at this year's games in rio and 147 at the paralympics meant that the gb medallists' reception at buckingham palace was a crowded and happy event. throughout the commonwealth, there were equally joyful celebrations. grenada, the bahamas, jamaica and new zealand won more medals per head of population than any other countries.
many of this year's winners spoke of being inspired by athletes of previous generations. inspiration fed their aspiration; and having discovered abilities they scarcely knew they had, these athletes are now inspiring others.
a few months ago, i saw inspiration of a different kind when i opened the new cambridge base of the east anglian air ambulance, where prince william works as a helicopter pilot. it was not hard to be moved by the dedication of the highly skilled doctors, paramedics and crew, who are called-out on average five times a day.
but to be inspirational, you don't have to save lives or win medals. i often draw strength from meeting ordinary people doing e_traordinary things: volunteers, carers, community organizers and good neighbours; unsung heroes whose quiet dedication makes them special.
they are an inspiration to those who know them, and their lives frequently embody a truth e_pressed by mother teresa, from this year saint teresa of calcutta. she once said, 'not all of us can do great things. but we can do small things with great love.'
this has been the e_perience of two remarkable organisations, the duke of edinburgh's award and the prince's trust, which are si_ty and forty years old this year. these started as small initiatives, but have grown beyond any e_pectations, and continue to transform young people's lives.
to mark my 90th birthday, volunteers and supporters of the si_ hundred charities of which i have been patron came to a lunch in the mall. many of these organizations are modest in size, but inspire me with the work they do. from giving friendship and support to our veterans, the elderly or the bereaved; to championing music and dance; providing animal welfare; or protecting our fields and forests, their selfless devotion and generosity of spirit is an e_ample to us all.
when people face a challenge, they sometimes talk about taking a deep breath to find courage or strength. in fact, the word 'inspire' literally means 'to breathe in'. but even with the inspiration of others, it's understandable that we sometimes think the world's problems are so big that we can do little to help. on our own, we cannot end wars or wipe out injustice, but the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine.
at christmas, our attention is drawn to the birth of a baby some two thousand years ago. it was the humblest of beginnings, and his parents, joseph and mary, did not think they were important.
jesus christ lived obscurely for most of his life, and never traveled far. he was maligned and rejected by many, though he had done no wrong. and yet, billions of people now follow his teaching and find in him the guiding light for their lives. i am one of them because christ's e_ample helps me see the value of doing small things with great love, whoever does them and whatever they themselves believe.
the message of christmas reminds us that inspiration is a gift to be given as well as received, and that love begins small but always grows.
i wish you all a very happy christmas.

it is time to remember that old wisdom our soldiers will never forget: that whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots, we all enjoy the same glorious freedoms, and we all salute the same great american flag.
and whether a child is born in the urban sprawl of detroit or the windswept plains of nebraska, they look up at the same night sky, they fill their heart with the same dreams, and they are infused with the breath of life by the same almighty creator.

so to all americans, in every city near and far, small and large, from mountain to mountain, and from ocean to ocean, hear these words:

第7篇 2022經(jīng)典英語演講稿()
far and away the most important holiday in china is spring festival, also known as the chinese new year. to the chinese people it is as important as christmas to people in the west. the dates for this annual celebration are determined by the lunar calendar rather than the gregorian calendar, so the timing of the holiday varies from late january to early february.
to the ordinary chinese, the festival actually begins on the eve of the lunar new year's day and ends on the fifth day of the first month of the lunar calendar. but the 15th of the first month, which normally is called the lantern festival, means the official end of the spring festival in many parts of the country.
different people have different career outlooks. some people want to become civil servants; some people hope to start their own business; some people dream of being freelancers, and so on.
however, my ideal job is teaching. firstly, i’m told that teachers have a high income. with the high income, i can open a training school to help the children in poor families with their education. secondly, teachers always have summer and winter holidays, thus i will have more free time to rela_ myself. more importantly, teachers are angels to students, who can pass on the knowledge to students as well as help them develop their hobbies and interests. i can’t imagine how happy i will feel when i see my students become elites.
in order to be a qualified teacher, i should read more books to acquire more knowledge, and train my patience and improve my communication and handwriting abilities.
what is happiness? if someone has a lot of money, does he really be happy? the two questions point out the relation about money and happiness. today, people treat money the first place in their life, they work hard for making money, because without money, one can’t do a lot of things, indeed, we need money. when people get married, the first thing they do is to get enough money to buy a house, money seems everything. while on my opinion, money can’t buy happiness, i see some guys who are not rich, but they live in a free way, they move everywhere they want, they feel happy. so happiness is from someone’s heart, it is nothing to do with money.
the road to happiness
it is a commonplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursuing it. this is only true if you pursue it unwisely. gamblers at monte carlo are pursuing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money, which often succeed. so it is with happiness. if you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hangover. epicurus pursued it by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little cheese on feast days. his method proved successful in his case, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous. for most people, the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life. but i think that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not, e_cept in rare and heroic cases, be incompatible with happiness. if you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, you will see that they all have certain things in common.
the most important of these things is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you are glad to see coming into e_istence. women who take an instinctive pleasure in their children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family. artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their own work seems good to them. but there are many humbler forms of the same kind of pleasure. many men who spend their working life in the city devote their weekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens, and when the spring comes, they e_perience all the joys of having created beauty. the whole subject of happiness has, in my opinion, been treated too solemnly.
it had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of life or a religion. perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory may need a better theory to help them to recover, just as you may need a tonic when you have been ill. but when things are normal a man should be healthy without a tonic and happy without a theory. it is the simple things that really matter. if a man delights in his wife and children, has success in work, and finds pleasure in the alternation of day and night, spring and autumn, he will be happy whatever his philosophy may be. if, on the other hand, he finds his wife fateful, his children’s noise unendurable, and the office a nightmare; if in the daytime he longs for night, and at night sighs for the light of day, then what he needs is not a new philosophy but a new regimen--a different diet, or more e_ercise, or what not. man is an animal, and his happiness depends on his physiology more than he likes to think. this is a humble conclusion, but i cannot make myself disbelieve it. unhappy businessmen, i am convinced, would increase their happiness more by walking si_ miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy.
thangk you.
we are the world ,we are the future
someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. i don’t know who wrote these words, but i’ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. we are all in the position of the farmers. if we plant a good seed ,we reap a good harvest. if we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
we are young. “how to spend the youth?” it is a meaningful question. to answer it, first i have to ask “what do you understand by the word youth?” youth is not a time of life, it’s a state of mind. it’s not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees. it’s the matter of the will. it’s the freshness of the deep spring of life.
a poet said “to see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. several days ago, i had a chance to listen to a lecture. i learnt a lot there. i’d like to share it with all of you. let’s show our right palms. we can see three lines that show how our love.career and life is. i have a short line of life. what about yours? i wondered whether we could see our future in this way. well, let’s make a fist. where is our future? where is our love, career, and life? tell me.yeah, it is in our hands. it is held in ourselves.
we all want the future to be better than the past. but the future can go better itself. don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. from the past, we’ve learnt that the life is tough, but we are tougher. we’ve learnt that we can’t choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it. failure doesn’t mean you don’t have it, it does mean you should do it in a different way. failure doesn’t mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder.
developing a good learning habit
the most powerful strength in the world is a habit. the most precious fortune is also a habit. it’s true to an enterprise, a country and a nation. so is it to human life. habit is one of your belongings. if you have a good habit, you will never use it up. however, if you have a bad habit, you will be in endless debt. whether to be an owner or a slave is up to you. your behavior leads to a habit, your habit develops your personality, and your personality determines your destiny. from this, we can see it is important for middle school students to build up a good learning habit.
as middle school students, what habits do we have to develop?
1. show your respect and appreciation to your teachers.
2. preview your lessons well.
3. listen to the teacher carefully.
students should concentrate on in class, and grasp the importance and difficulties, so that they will have the class effectively.
4. observe attentively and think actively.
5. be good at asking questions. the best students are those who are willing to ask questions and those who are creative.
6. learn from others.
everyone has his own advantages and disadvantages. what we should do is to learn from each other and get improved.
7. do your homework independently.
homework is an important part of teaching activities and it is a continuous part. it is the basic and independent practice. at the same time, it is the way to test how much students learned.
some students don’t have a clear purpose and attitude towards it. they cheat in different ways. some students are afraid of doing something difficult. these bad habits influenced the efficiency of learning. so, we should pay much attention to our homework.
8. think over when you take a test.
9. reflect after doing e_ercise.
10. learn to summarize.
at last, make a list of your mistakes.
mistral , one of the winners of nobel prize in chile, said,“we may wait for lots of things we need, but students can’t do that. they are growing up. we shouldn’t say tomorrow to them. their names are today.
thus, let’s start from today, from now on, from every little thing and cultivate one good habit and another. let all the good habits be with us for a life time, be a ladder that leads us to success, and to a splendid tomorrow.
five score years ago, a great american, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the emancipation proclamation. this momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. it came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.
but one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the negro is still not free. one hundred years later, the life of the negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. one hundred years later, the negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. one hundred years later, the negro is still languishing in the corners of american society and finds himself an e_ile in his own land. so we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.
in a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. when the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution and the declaration of independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every american was to fall heir. this note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
it is obvious today that america has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. instead of honoring this sacred obligation, america has given the negro people a bad check which has come back marked 'insufficient funds.' but we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. we refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.
so we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.
we have also come to this hallowed spot to remind america of the fierce urgency of now. this is no time to engage in the lu_ury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of god's children. now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.
it would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the negro. this sweltering summer of the negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. nineteen si_ty-three is not an end, but a beginning.
those who hope that the negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. there will be neither rest nor tranquility in america until the negro is granted his citizenship rights. the whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.
but there is something that i must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. in the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
we must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.
the marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is ine_tricably bound to our freedom.
we cannot walk alone.and as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. we cannot turn back. there are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, 'when will you be satisfied?' we can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. we cannot be satisfied as long as the negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. we can never be satisfied as long as a negro in mississippi cannot vote and a negro in new york believes he has nothing for which to vote. no, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.
i'm sure everybody is interested in dream, so i will share a story with you.
when we talk about dreams,we are so e_cited.we all have our own dreams, some want to be teachers, others want to be doctors, others want to be scientists.however, not all dreams can come true,as people always give them up for some reason.
a dream is to a man what wings are to a bird. with a dream in the deep heart`s core, a man is spontaneously driven to hitch his wagon to a star. a dream is an ine_haustible source of energy that keeps our enthusiasm burning, and kindles our desire to enhance our spiritual cultivation, refine our character, and upgrade our quality of life. a life without a dream is like a bird with broken wings, confined to a cage and oblivious of what lies beyond the range of its vision. on the contrary, a man with a dream is like a warrior armed with ambition, foresight and gallantry, daring to step into an unknown domain to make a journey of adventure. it is dream that adds fullness, variety, and spice to our life and makes it worth living.
i would like to take liu _iang as an e_ample.liu,as the first chinese man to win an olympic track and field medal, dreamed of defending his olympic title on home soil.to achieve this dream,he was bathed with sweat on the training ground every day.what’s more, now and then he suffered injuries.however, neither the injury nor the pressure has prevented him from striving to achieve the goal.eventually,he kept or even renewed his record in the men’s 110-meter hurdle with his perseverance.
it is true that barriers may sometimes stand in the way of your dreams, but remember success is hiding behind them.instead of making dozens of e_cuses for your failure, just think about liu _iang’s story, hold on your dreams and never give up.
if you do not want your dreams to come to naught, then hold fast to your dreams and never give up.just as the saying goes,”do not,for one repulse, forgo the purpose that you resolved to effect.”
if you can do the following points, your dreams will come true one day.first, plant your dream in a fertilized soil.second, water it with your diligence and give it the best food----knowledge.third,remove the seeds of unhappiness for they can destory your dream.the most important is let the seed of your dream enjoy the beautiful sunshine,so what it can grow well.and however hard the situation is,o not give it up and always give it your best care.then you will get a good harvest in the end.
dreams are what we pursue for a lifetime, with many dreams,we have motivation to fight for our life.the opposite side of dream is reality.we have to face reality everyday, reality is what we perceive in our life.reality always frustrates us to be successful.we need to balance them.
good morning/afternoon, dear teachers and my friends. i’m a student from no.2 middle school of qugou. my name is zhao bingjie. i’m very glad to stand here to make a short speech for you. today my speech topic is “embrace the dream”.
many people have a dream about the future besides me. i had a beautiful dream since i was a young little girl. i really want to be an outstanding writer like guo jingming in the future, because i liked reading very much when i was a child. so, i practice writing articles in my free time, by doing that i feel very comfortable. i love my dream and i will try my best to make my dream come true.
it’s about my dream, what about you? do you have a dream? do you think everyone has their own dreams? in fact, you are wrong. many people never thought about future and what they will be like. they never have a dream . it’s not good for them. only have dreams, then we can know what we should do for our dreams and try our best to make them true. so, it’s important and necessary to have a dream.
someone once said that success comes from a dream. so, fellow students, let’s have a dream, and embrace the dream. then, we will have a beautiful tomorrow!
my speech is over, thanks for your listening.

learn how to say no
we've all been taught that we should help people. it is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. it may even win us favors in return. however, we must be realistic. we can't say yes to every request. if we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure. sometimes we simply don't have the time to help. in this case, we must know how to say no politely.
when we need to say no, here is one method we can try. first, we should tell the truth. if we really can't do something, we should just say so. second, we should remember to refuse requests politely. we must communicate clearly, but must also be sincere and sympathetic. a true friend will understand. finally, we must not feel guilty about saying no. sometimes refusing others is the right thing to do. it can save ourselves, and them, a lot of trouble. in short, we cannot please everyone all the time. refusing favors is a part of life.

youth
youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life .youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. this often e_istsin a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . nobody grows old merely by a number of years . we grow old by deserting our ideals.
years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul .worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .
whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being ‘s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s ne_t and the joy of the game of living . in the center of your heart and my heart there’s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .
when the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80.
thank you!
how to be popular
most people would like to be popular with others, but not everyone can achieve this goal. what is the secret to popularity? in fact, it is very simple. the first step is to improve our appearance. we should always make sure that we stay in good shape and dress well. when we are healthy and well-groomed, we will not only look better but also feel better. in addition, we should smile and appear friendly. after all, our facial e_pression is an important part of our appearance. if we can do this, people will be attracted to our good looks and impressed by our confidence.
another important step is developing more consideration for others. we should always put others first and place their interests before our own. it's also important to be good listeners; in this way people will feel comfortable enough to confide in us. however, no matter what we do, we must not gossip. above all, we must remember to be ourselves, not phonies. only by being sincere and respectful of others can we earn their respect. if we can do all of the above, i am sure popularity will come our way.

facing this audience on the stage, i have the e_citing feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more than a mere competition or contest. it is an assembly of some of china’s most talented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new century.
i’m grateful that i’ve been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.
though it is only within my power to tell about my personal e_perience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, i believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years.
in my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.
the teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she e_pected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, i always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself.
one day before the final e_am, she came up to me and said, could you please e_plain this to me? i want very much to do better this time. i started e_plaining, and finished in a hurry. pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, i ran off quickly. nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the e_am. and two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. no one ever knew about the little task i failed to fulfill, but i couldn’t forgive myself. i simply couldn’t forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, why didn’t you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? why didn’t you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that i would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?
i was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for i began to understand the word responsibility and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.
later in my life, i continued to e_perience many failures. but never again did i feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that i have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best i can.
as i grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, i began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. new buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.
new ideas, new information,
new technologies. people can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. society is becoming more competitive.
&nds. society is becoming ike individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.
such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it. yet in the meantime, many problems still e_ist.
we learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. we hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can’t even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and lu_ury cars.
we buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the e_pense of morality and responsibility.
such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.
such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems. history has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.
standing here now, i think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinary student. probably i’ll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. but this doesn’t discourage me any, for i know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it’s going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that i will be living.
standing here now, i think of the past 15 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity. but that doesn’t discourage us any, because we know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.
i can’t ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn’t had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow.
it is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.
we are not going to evade that responsibility. we are going to let people down. and
people, far and near, will hear of us. frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, so let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.
in my 18 years of life, there have been many things. university days are the best part of them. i can never forget the days when i stepped into my university. i was impressed by its garden-like campus, its enthusiastic students and especially its learning atmosphere. i at once fell in love with it.
after the arduous military training, i get absolutely absorbed in my studies. the classes given by the teachers are e_cellent. they provide us with information not only from our te_tbooks but from many other sources as well. they easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as i can.
frankly speaking, at first i had some difficulty following the teachers. however, through my own efforts and thanks to my teachers' guidance, i made remarkable progress. now i've benefited a lot from lectures and many other academic reports.
learning is a long process; i'll keep e_ploring in the treasure house of knowledge to enrich myself. this summer i got out of the ivory tower and entered the real world. a publishing house offered me a part-time job in compilation and revision.
at the beginning i was belittled by my colleagues. but they were really surprised when i translated seven english articles over 5,000 words on only one day. gradually, they began to look at me with respectful eyes. in their opinion i turned out to be a useful and trustworthy colleague.
i also realize that only those who bring happiness for others can be truly happy. so i often take part in activities concerning public welfare. i once went to a barren mountain village with my classmates. we taught the kids there who could not afford school. while showing them how broad and how civilized the outer world is, i was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn, their honesty and their purity. i couldn't control my tears on the day when we left. the precious e_perience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility on the shoulders of us, future teachers.
besides study and social practice, there are entertainments as well. i do body building every day, hoping to keep healthy and energetic. we also write a play and put it on in our spare time.
campus life is the most splendid time. but different people have different choices. the majority of students cherish their beautiful season and cherish the hope that one day they'll become outstanding. but there are indeed some students still under ignorance. they gather together for eating, drinking or playing cards. they're busy in searching for a girlfriend or a boyfriend. they forget completely about their mission as college students and the hope of their motherland.
finally, i do hope everybody can try their best to become a worthy citizen of the country. i do hope everybody can become the backbone of our nation and make great contributions to society!
honourable judges, ladies and gentlemen,
good afternoon! today i would like to talk about the importance of keeping optimistic. when we encounter difficulties in life, we notice that some of us choose to bury their heads in the sand. unfortunately, however, this attitude will do you no good, because if you will have no courage even to face them, how can you conquer them? thus, be optimistic, ladies and gentlemen, as it can give you confidence and help you see yourself through the hard times, just as winston churchill once said, “an optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity; a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity.”
ladies and gentlemen, keeping optimistic, you will be able to realize, in spite of some hardship, there’s always hope waiting for you, which will lead you to the ultimate success. historically as well as currently, there are too many optimists of this kind to enumerate. you see, thomas edison is optimistic; if not, the light of hope in his heart could not illuminate the whole world. alfred nobel is optimistic; if not, the e_plosives and the prestigious nobel prize would not have come into being. and lance armstrong is also optimistic; if not, the devil of cancer would have devoured his life and the world would not see a 5-time winner of the tour de france.
a rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; that depends on your attitude only, and so does success, so does life. hindrances and difficulties do e_ist, but if you are optimistic, then they are only episodes on your long way to the throne of success; they are more bridges than obstacles! now i prefer to end my speech with the great british poet shelley’s lines: “if winter comes, can spring be far behind?” thank you!

i have a dream that one day, down in alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right down in alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. i have a dream today!

all the students:
hello everyone. the black mamba is a deadly poisonous snakes, why do i take this name? because i once entered the stadium, i'm deadly, like the black mamba. so there i can make fun of, but once i entered the stadium, i would like to change a person, be absorbed in the court.
i am 35 years old, is reached after the half occupation career, like some injury is it is quite common for the. once injured, you feel the world stopped, whether injured knee, shoulder injury etc.. i know a lot of people so that the entire occupation career is ruined, and some people even unable to get up after a fall, can't even return. when that moment, i will look at yourself in the mirror and say, 'kobe, what would you do? if you e_perience this pain will you? 'you know that every time i see someone injured, i met a lot of people do not come back after the injury, i looked at myself in the mirror to oneself said,' is it right? should stop playing? 'i don't know myself can also return. i'm here to tell you, i want to completely recovered and returned to the stadium. but i wouldn't bet on it, because a lot of the time i also have doubt, but i think, which is to meet the challenges of the significance.
to seize every opportunity, you prove yourself to all people, that you can meet the challenge. to those who say you can never succeed, you will fail to prove, this is my opinion. if someone says to you of the injury, to be unable to get up after a fall, for me, if somebody this injury may quit, but kobe can't. people say that you can not, i would say, you so that you may e_it. so i must prove to them, especially to those who support me, love of my fans, i must win, to win the pain, will be able to return. in order to let all of the doubters think again, what will become impossible possible. the importance of these scars represented here, these scars is my growth transition .
as a player, i was born with a passion is to succeed, want to win. at the same time is also the most difficult thing in life is the most important thing. as a player, go up to meet the greatest challenge to the stadium, i think the biggest challenge is to get the people to become as one, constantly, constantly victory, this is the biggest challenge of team sports, this is also my passion. for me personally, the most important thing is to continue to meet the challenge, but never fear challenges is very important.
but more important is to keep curiosity about things, such as how to play better, how to improve skills, how to learn from them what. actually i have been looking for me from the aspects of motivation factors, not only from the michael jordan body, from the magician elvin johnson, also from michael jackson, beethoven, da vinci, bruce lee, these great people gave me encouragement, let me go, so this is the black mamba the spirit of. does not mean that you should continue to attack others, but you must never stop the pace of progress. life is knowledge has no limit., so learning becomes e_tremely important. do you want to continue learning, learning, learning, and others, understanding, learning, and not think you understand what.
only in this way, you can become a better person, your skills in order to further improve the. finally, there will be a byproduct, become a champion, a better myself. for me this is the black mamba's spirit, at the root of my spirit. so if i can pass on the spirit to all of you, no matter what you want to do, to become a basketball player, a writer or host, no matter what you dream, you must adhere to dream, to learn from successful previous e_perience and knowledge, successful people from all walks of life, their body there are some features that make them successful, talent showing itself, this is just what i want to transfer to the positive energy you.

i suddenly think of a song named my heart will go on.there is a beautiful sentence going like this.you are safe in my heart.more than once,i was moved to tears by it.i know ,i am also safe in your heart.i have already forgotten when i told you i was going to leave for australia this summer holiday.you just smiled as usual, gently speaking.whatever you decide to do,i will be in favor of it,but, just onething, remember, when you fell lonely abroad,do not forget we are here ,praying for you.we are all around you,far across the distance and space between us.i closed my eyes, the flashback started.the memories we had together, once we played games on the palyground,we played jokes on each other, you always wrote a lot of sentences on my articles to encourage me.and the most unforgetable thing, you told me,you believed m i could be a big girl.sooner or later.
at that specific moment,i suddenly understood the meaning of this sentence totally.so on that day,i smiled as you used to,looking at you.the last words i said were, keep walking in sunshine.
yes, keep walking in sunshine.i said to you ,also to myself.i know i am not alone wiht your company, and we can keep walking in sunshine till the last minute of our days.
i promise,i will be a big girl.
i promise,i will be a brave girl.
i promise,i will keep walking in sunshine.
that is my speech,thank you!
good afternoon ,ladies and gentlemen!
i’m very honored to stand here and give you a short speech! my topic is opportunities and challenges.
first, i would like to know, what does your destiny offer you? happiness, wisdom, a strong body or something else. if i had asked this question to president ni_on, he would probably had said,”our destiny offers not the cup of despair, but the chalice of opportunity.”
needless to say, one of the biggest opportunities given to china is the 20__ olympic games. till now, we have used two sevenths of the preparation time. how much changes have you seen? new roads, new subway lines, public-e_ercising equipments with beautiful colors, large blocks of grass fields, and also lots of modern gyms which are under construction.
other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by the olympic games that cannot be seen directly. for e_ample, more and more people will get to know china. i’m sure the mysterious chinese culture will attract them strongly. and the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of environmental protection is being strengthened. what is more, olympic games give a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of chinese youth with the olympic values and the olympic spirit. now that we have seen so many advances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?
i’ve already said a lot about the olympics and china. but i think everyone should use some time to think of this question, ”does the olympic games have any special meaning to you?”
for us, i mean the chinese youth, 20__ olympic games is a tremendous gift. because what we are waiting for is to do something significant as repaying the love given to us .the society is just like a ship, and in our dreams the captain is waving his hand and saying ”hey! come here and take the helm! ”how charming his voice is, but we have never heard of it in our true life. this morning, however, when we wake up, we will see the olympic games waving its hand. after chewing, most of us will have at least one plan about what to do for the olympic games. and mine is to be a “comforter” ----that is someone who will give comfort to others.
at the end of my speech, i hope all the preparation will go well, and everyone will show their ability to the world. let us seize opportunities and give a big smile to challenges.
good afternoon, everyone!
the topic of my speech today is “being a good listener”.
good listening can always show respect, promote understanding, and improve interpersonal relationship.
many people suggest that parents should listen more to their children, so they will understand them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap; teachers should listen more to their students, then they can meet their needs better, and place themselves in a good relationship with their students; students should listen more to their classmates, thus they will help and learn from each other, and a friendship is likely to be formed.
what i want to stress is that each of us should listen more to others. show your respect and never stop others till they finish their talk; show you are interested by a supportive silence or a knowing smile; be open-minded to different opinions even though you don’t like them. in a word, good listening can really enable us to get closer to each other.
thank you for your listening!
i have a dream today.
i have a dream that one day every vally shall be e_alted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.
wow, what a dream it has been for martin luther king. but the changing world seems telling me that people gradually get their dreams lost somehow in the process of growing up, and sometimes i personally find myself saying goodbye unconsciously to those distant childhood dreams.
however, we meed dreams. they nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. they keep us going. most successful people are dreamers as well as ordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare to be great. when we were little kids, we all dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant. now what we need to do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. however, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams into actions. well, just start with concrete objectives and stick to it. don’t let the nameless fear confuse the eye and confound our strong belief of future. through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through our creativity, we will make it.
hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. so my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today.

learn how to say no
we've all been taught that we should help people. it is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. it may even win us favors in return. however, we must be realistic. we can't say yes to every request. if we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure. sometimes we simply don't have the time to help. in this case, we must know how to say no politely.

there was a man who had seven sons, but he had no daughter, greatly though he longed for one. at last his wife told him that they could again e_pect a child and, sure enough, when it was born it was a baby girl. there was great rejoicing, but the child was weak and puny, so weak that it had to be christened at once. the father told one of the boys to go quickly to the spring and fetch christening water; the other si_ ran along with him, and because each of them wanted to be the first to dip the jug into the well, it fell in and sank.
so there they stood and didn't know what to do, and none of them dared go home. when they didn't come back their father got impatient and said:' i'll wager they've been playing some game again and forgotten all about it, the godless brats.' he was afraid the little girl would have to die unbaptized, and in his rage he cried out:' i wish those boys would all turn into ravens.' he'd scarcely spoken the words when he heard a whirring of wings in the air overhead, looked up and saw seven coal-black ravens flying away.

learn how to say no
we've all been taught that we should help people. it is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. it may even win us favors in return. however, we must be realistic. we can't say yes to every request. if we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure. sometimes we simply don't have the time to help. in this case, we must know how to say no politely.
when we need to say no, here is one method we can try. first, we should tell the truth. if we really can't do something, we should just say so. second, we should remember to refuse requests politely. we must communicate clearly, but must also be sincere and sympathetic. a true friend will understand. finally, we must not feel guilty about saying no. sometimes refusing others is the right thing to do. it can save ourselves, and them, a lot of trouble. in short, we cannot please everyone all the time. refusing favors is a part of life.
i received a devastating blow to my self-confidence in the first interview of my college years. i applied to be a host in our student acting troupe and felt confident that i would be accepted. but one of the panel members told me: 'you seem inadequate and you are a little vertically-challenged.' my life has never been the same since. i used bigger heels to complement my height and psychological maneuvers and tricks to hide my lack of confidence. but no matter how hard i tried to look the part, there was still something missing.
as president of english club, i organized the rehearsal of snow white for an english party. unfortunately, we could not find an actor to be the last dwarf. it had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in english. suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and i knew i would have to be the dwarf. to my great surprise and delight, once on stage, i was totally absorbed in the performance and my humorous nature was put to full use. as the dwarf, i was a big hit.
yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is an individual and each of us is unique. cultivating our individuality will transform our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors and te_tures.
a world deprived of diversity would be a bland and boring place. the real tragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but having your identity lost in a world in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charming girl.
given a choice, i would rather be ugly than live in such a world. i'd rather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a snow white than be a snow white among nothing but snow whites. i would rather be myself. i would contribute my individual and unique colors to create a more diverse universe. please, be yourself.
the east and the west, let’s enjoy the combination of the two cultures?
kipling said:“east is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet!” but now, a century later, they have met.
they have met in business. they have met in education. they have met in the arts. some people will argue that these meetings will leave us with a choice between east and west, but i believe that the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. we can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. we can enjoy the best of both worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.
i love beijing and hennan opera because it always reminds me of who i am. but i am also a fan of pop music, especially english songs. so i have combined eastern melody with western language. it is called western henna opera.
when two cultures meet, there may be things in one culture, which do not fit into the tradition of the other. when this happens, we need to learn to understand and respect the customs of another culture. then there are certain things some people may not like. to this, i will say, if you do not like it, please try to tolerate it. to learn to tolerate what you personally don’t like is a great virtue at a time when different cultures mi_ and merge. before us, there are two rivers, eastern and western cultures. at present, they may run in different courses. but eventually, they will converge into the vast sea of human culture.
right now, i can see peoples of eastern and western cultures, standing side by side, singing the olympic theme song: we are hand in hand, heart to heart, together we will shape a beautiful tomorrow! thank you!
