the topic of my speech today is “being a good listener”.

good listening can always show respect, promote understanding, and improve interpersonal relationship.

many people suggest that parents should listen more to their children, so they will understand them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap; teachers should listen more to their students, then they can meet their needs better, and place themselves in a good relationship with their students; students should listen more to their classmates, thus they will help and learn from each other, and a friends hip is likely to be formed.

what i want to stress is that each of us should listen to others. show your respect and n ever stop others till they finish their talk; show you are interested by a supportive silence or a knowing smile; be open-minded to different opinio ns even though you don't like them. in a word, good listening can really enable us to get closer to each other.

the past two days are special for the 7.23 million e_aminees and their parents. it is the national college entrance e_amination (gaokao in chinese). based on the current education system in china, the result of the two day e_am greatly impacts the future of any students in china. the score will decide whether you can receive college education. for most places in china, only half of the students are eligible for college education (only 3.40 million will be admitted to colleges in 20__) and the rest has to start work after high-school. in cities like beijing and shanghai, students are lucky enough to have a much higher ratio (more than 70%) to enter colleges.

tsinghua, peking university, fudan university and shanghai jiao tong university are among the first class in china. but only very few people can go there.

to enter a college or not, or to enter a good college or not directly impact the first offer they can get after graduate and impact their career. so it is the most critical time for students.

isaac recorded the 'no honking during gaokao' sign. i saw the same sign near henan rd. and zhaojiabang rd.. not only honking is not allowed. all construction sites around schools were ordered to work in limited time in the recent 10 days. thousands of policemen are working around schools to make sure there is no noise or traffic jam during the two important days. ta_i drivers even offer free ride to transport e_aminees and their family.

many human activities and their by-products have the potential to pollute water.please have a look along the banks of the river,large and small industrial enterprises discharge dirty

water,tons of garbage were thrown into the river,the water contained so much that it can＇t clean itself.compared with the dramatic development in many sides of shanghai,the suzhou river has become a black point of the appearance of city.

fortunately,the government has control the situation now,we are happy to see some parts of the river has become clean again,and we even can find fish sometime.

the unique earth is the only planet full of lives,the water is just like the blood in the active body,protecting water is saving ourselves.not to waste a single drop of water,otherwise,the only drop of water we could keep in the future would be our tear!

jw: so is english mania good or bad? is english a tsunami, washing away other languages? not likely.english is the world's second language. your native language is your life. but with english you can become part of a wider conversation — a global conversation about global problems, like climate change or poverty, or hunger or disease.

the world has other universal languages. mathematics is the language of science. music is the language of emotions. and now english is becoming the language of problem-solving. not because america is pushing it, but because the world is pulling it.
